GRATEFUL TO YOU--Lyrics by Malinda (Williams) Jackson

Chorus-I want to say thank you for the sacrifice you made! Because of you, I can see you have unlocked doors for me! If I try, I can be whatever I set my mind to be, and so I'm grateful.....I'm grateful to you! ....

1. Mae Jemison despite the odds, became the first black woman astronaut. She went to school, she stayed on track, she didn't let anyone hold her back. Now If I try, I can be what ever I set my mind to be and so I'm grateful, I'm grateful to you. Chorus

2.Martin Luther King --he had a dream that we could live in harmony, in his fight for civil rights he paved the way for you and me. So if I try I can be whatever I set my mind to be and so I'm grateful, I'm grateful to you. Chorus

3. November 4th 2008 Barack Obama did something great. He gave us hope, he fought for change. Became the president of the USA. So if I try I can be whatever I set my mind to be, and so I'm grateful. I'm grateful to you. Chorus

4. Malcolm X, Booker T, Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Langston Hughes, Charles Drew, Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou. So if I try the best I can on your shoulders I will stand and so I'm grateful. ... grateful to you

You Want Me to Stand

AMERICA!!! You want me to stand for

A song written by Frances Scot Key

This song doesn’t represent me.You don't know your history.

AMERICA!!!! You want me to stand for a song that was made

By a man who owned slaves.

AMERICA!!!! You want me to stand for a song written by a slave master

Who was paid to look for runaway slaves to capture.

In 1815, he wrote  “ O’re the land of the Free  and the home of the brave”   Land of the free?

Slavery didn’t end until 1863. He wasn’t talking about me. You don't know your history.

AMERICA!!!! Have you listened to verse 3 of this anthem where he speaks of freed slaves.

His wish was that they were sent to their graves.

AMERICA!!! You want me to stand for a song that was introduced by Woodrow Wilson, one of the most racist presidents in modern times.

Under his presidency, lynching blacks was at an all time high.

AMERICA!!!! I don’t want to stand for a hateful song that wanted my ancestors to be in slavery.

Like Kapernick , I’d rather take a knee…. against police brutality.

The Middle Passage

(Sunset)

Africa was invaded by greed.

The demand for cheap labor was in need.

The Portuguese, the English, the French, the Dutch

Took us on a journey that was much to much.

Kidnapped us from the jungle and invaded our tribes

Even promised jobs to some, they lied.

For three long months we road on a ship.

So close to each other, we were hip to hip.

Not allowed to speak in African, they would cut out our tongues.

Or throw us to the sharks with no place to run.

Oh the smell the stench, for goodness sakes,

No such thing as a bathroom break.

The smell of sickness, the smell of death,

The sight of rats crawling over our chest.

Day by day, night by night, freedom disappeared before our sight.

Finally, a reality set in we couldn’t deny.

To Mother Africa we said goodbye.
